The ISSRC2008 finally happened!
After months of preparation, the conference finally got off the starting block. It was held at the Novotel Clarke Quay Hotel from 23 to 25 April 2008. A total of 290 delegates from 12 countries attended the conference.
The conference got off on a high note with Brigadier General Tsoi Mun Heng from the Singapore Ministry of Defence sharing with us his perspectives on safety, especially in the context of Singapore, in the Keynote Address during the Opening Ceremony.
A total of 50 papers were presented during the conference. Feedback from participants was very positive and encouraging. Being the first such conference in the region, the participants were enthusiastic and asked many questions. No doubt many went away with a better understanding of system safety. |

International Luncheon
Conference delegates were treated to another informative presentation delivered by our distinguished speaker Ms Patricia Vittitow, the Chief of Safety at the US Army Aviation and Missile Command in Huntsville, USA during the International Luncheon on the second day of the conference.

Banquet
The conference also held an off-site event at the Singapore Asian Civilisation Museum on the night of Conference Day 2. The event featured some interesting aspects of entertainment in Singapore. To start off the banquet dinner, the guests were treated to a highly energetic Bhangra Dance. During the dinner, which featured local food, the guests had their names hand painted in Chinese (even translations of Caucasian names!) onto paper fans by a local Chinese Calligraphy Master. The guests were also entertained by an Indian Fortune Teller using a parrot trained to pick up cards which were subsequently used to tell the fortune of the participant.

Delegates' Opinion
Delegates who who have given feedback during the conference appreciated the opportunity to network with delegates and safety professionals to share ideas and advance the understanding of safety. Software safety and the software safety tutorial on the third day was cited as beneficial. Delegates were also appreciative of the learnings on concepts, methodology and techniques of system safety.
Overseas delegates enjoyed the Singapore hospitality and congratulated the Organising Committee on the successful ISSRC 08 both for the rich technical content and the organisational efforts.
