Chapter Sharing Session held on 28 Jun 05

The Singapore Chapter held a get-together and sharing session on the evening of 28 Jun 2005. This was the fourth meeting organized by the local Chapter since its inception in Sep 03. The session was held in the main auditorium of the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA) Tower, Depot Road.

The session commenced with an introduction about the Chapter by new Chapter President, Michael Tan, who had taken over from Ms Onn Eng Ling. Michael also introduced the new Executive Committee members for the new term and announced the new goals and directions for the Singapore Chapter.

Three speakers from diverse backgrounds shared their experiences on safety.

Philip Tan from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) started the session to provided an insight into the current system safety practices in the LTA and how project safety is managed in LTA.

Siow Seet Ting presented “Integrated Software System Safety Process”. She explained software safety processes and how they are implemented throughout the lifecycle of a typical product development.

 

 

A/Prof Chua, NUS

A/Prof David Chua from the Department of Civil Engineering, National University of Singapore, shared on the development of a knowledge-based software that can analyse building construction mishap data and categorise them to quantify the risk.

The topic titled “Enhancing Safety Planning with Past Safety Knowledge” touched on how critical hazards may be highlighted using a developmental software to analyse existing mishap database.

 

More than 50 people from various organisations attended the sharing session. They were from DSTA, DSO National Labs, ST Engineering, the Singapore Armed Forces, LTA, National University of Singapore and Ministry of Manpower. After the presentations, participants interacted over a tea session sponsored by DSTA Systems Engineering Division.

The System Safety Society (Singapore Chapter) held a gathering cum sharing session on the evening of 3 Sep 2004. This was the third session organised since the inception of the society and the second one this year. The event was held at the Main Auditorium of the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA) Tower at Depot Road.

Ms Rosemary Yeo, Divisional Manager of Armament System Division in DSTA gave the welcome address. Chapter President, Ms Onn Eng Ling delivered an update on the parent society’s recent developments whilst Ms Siow Seet Ting provided the updates on Chapter activities.

Three presentations for sharing with the system safety fraternity from Singapore.

Dr Aaron Chia from DSTA shared on safety lessons we can learn from the Columbia Accident, based on the paper “What System Safety Engineering Can Learn From the Columbia Accident” presented by Ms Leveson at the recently concluded 22nd ISSC at Providence, Rhode Island.

Fan Yue Sang shared his paper on “Incorporating System Safety In An Underground Ammunition Facility”. He had presented the same paper at the 22nd ISSC.

Tan Shu Yin presented “Software Safety Testing for Safety Critical Systems”. The presentation discussed on how we can address the coverage of software testing, the robustness of such tests, how to identify high risk areas and recommended a software hazard criticality matrix.

A total of 53 persons attended the sharing session. They were from DSTA, Singapore Technologies Engineering, the National University of Singapore, the Singapore Police Force and the Ministry of Defence. The evening ended with a buffet dinner
(sponsored by DSTA Armament System Division) and informal small group discussions with rounds of coffee.
